Grand Erg Occidental Algerian Desert - Algeria
Erg means sand sea. When we think of Sahara desert the first picture that comes
to one's mind is hill of sand with sand being blown by air and somewhere in the
middle of all that lies a pond of blue water (oasis) with coconut or palm trees
growing all around it, well that's not true as most of the Sahara desert is not
rolling sand dune but its a vast expanse of rocks.
Those rolling sand dunes and hills of powdery sand which is normally imagined if
found here in Grand Erg Occidental, Algerian Desert. They can stretch for
hundreds of miles at heights of up to 1,000 feet and cover about 20 percent of
the Sahara. This true desert region receives less than 25 cm (10 in) of rainfall
per year. It contains no roads and no humans live here. This tourism place is
more popular among foreign tourists than the locals.
There are several transport options available to come here. It is usually recommended not to go too far inside as the ever changing landscape ( especially during windy conditions) can get tourists lost in this vast sea of sand. Lots of visitors travel to this desert to take a truly memorable pictures. Grand Erg Oriental starts almost in the centre of Algeria, and continues well into Tunisia.
