The Perito Moreno Glacier is located in the Los Glaciares National Park in south west Patagonia, Argentina. This is area located in Santa Cruz province and with its exceptional natural beauty, it is one of the most important tourist destinations of Argentina. You will find walls of ice have an height varying from 30 to 70 meters, towering mountains and numerous glacial lakes and its not difficult to see these huge walls of ice breaking down breaking and falling down with a thunder.
This area also in includes a popular lake called Lake Argentino, which is 160 km long. Perito Moreno is the most outstanding glacier, having a front of 5 km long and a height of over 60 meters above the level of the water, with a total ice depth of 170 meters.. In 1981 UNESCO declared National Park Los Glaciares a World Heritage Site. There is a small hike into Glacier National Park to see Perito Moreno glacier and about 47 other glaciers of Argentina. These glaciers flow into Lake Argentino, Ameghino, Frias and Oneilli. These glaciers are fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field located in the Andes system. The good thing about Perito Moreno Glacier is also that they are the handful of glaciers that are not retreating, it advances at the rate of 2 meters a day and loses by the same amount as the ice breaks. The Curva de Los Suspiros provides the panoramic view of the Perito Moreno Glacier. Los Glaciares National Park has an area of 1,722 square miles (4,459 square km) and was established in 1937.
This area is located 2700 kilometers from the capital of Buenos Aires. The best time to go here is Late spring to mid-fall (November to April). Tourist facilities shut down in harsh winter months. You can reach here by flying to the El Calafate airport and from there arranging a road tour to these glacier site.
