Cat Island - Bahamas
It is the sixth biggest island in Bahamas and one of the most beautiful,
unspoiled, and mostly untouched by tourism and less commercialized, this also
makes staying on this island less expensive than the other islands of Bahamas.
Cat island also has the highest point in Bahamas called Mount Alvernia which is
206 ft high. On the top of Mount Alvernia there is a monastery called The
Hermitage.
Cat Island, Bahamas is shaped like a fishhook and located 210 kilometers (130 miles) southeast of the capital city of Nassau. It is believed that the name of this island was kept after Arthur Catt a famous pirate was active in the surrounding waters. The population of cat island is under 2000 people, who are quite are friendly. The main towns are Arthur’s Town, Orange Creek, and Port Howe. The first Europeans arrived here were in 1783, the Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution. The main crop of island was cotton but now, slash and burn farming is now the most common. These days there are a lot of farmers who are engaged in exporting cascarilla bark to Europe which is then used in medicines and liquor. Quite a few people are also engaged in the tourist industry; few locals make straw hats and bags and sell them to the tourists. It is also believed by many locals that claim that Cat Island residents were the first to see Columbus.
