Barra Grande Tourism and Travel Information:
Barra Grande is a beautiful tourist village in the south coast of state
of Bahia, in north east Brazil. It is famous for its
untouched tropical beauty which includes its beaches, forests, rivers and
waterfalls. It is located in the Peninsula of Marau and because it is
difficult to access than other popular/commercial centers this place has the
charm of an old fisherman village and perfect for any tourist looking
for a relaxed and peaceful vacation. Most people prefer to spend their
time either in Barra Grande or go to the beaches of the Marau
Peninsula.
How to Reach Barra Grande ?
Tourists can come here by taking small planes which run from Salvador
(SSA) international airport to Barra Grande. The closest small airport
is Ilheus (IOS) which has daily flights from Salvador airport. You can
also use several public boats and tourist agency (private boats) which
connect port of Camamu to Barra Grande and run several times a day.
Some just prefer to take a 4x4 and come here by the dirt roads, although
exciting for some but not recommended.
Activities and attractions:
There are many beaches in Marau, the main beach of the village is
Mangueiras Beach and a handful of few shops and bars close by. The water is
calm and the sand is white in color. Popular activities include Scuba
diving, snorkeling, swimming, hiking, sailing, surfing and more.
The Camamu Bay located here is one of the major bay's in Brazil. The
Camamu Bay, an important fishing, mining and tourist site. It has
beautiful mangroves, landscapes, forests and many islands. You can rent a boat
to explore this area and its many nearby islands.
Ilha Da Pedra Furada is a small island located 45 minutes from Barra
Grandeand famous for it's large pierced stone formed by erosion.
Ilha Grande is the biggest island of the bay and lot
of local residents live here. Walking is the best way to discover the
island.
Local Life and Where to Stay in Barra Grande:
The streets are unpaved and there are no cars around this area, most of
the people who come here by road come in their 4x4 vehicles. If you go
in the bars of Barra Grande, you will probably see people from other
countries too who have made Barra Grande as their home. There are lodges
and inns for tourists who come here and there are houses available for
people planning to stay here for a longer time.
The local population of Marau Area is quite small and mainly cultivate
of rubber trees, clove, cacao, African oil palm and pepper.
Best time to visit/ weather:
The climate is considered as humid tropical climate. The annual average
temperature is 25 degree centigrade and the rainiest period is from April to July
which you should avoid for tourism.
