Anegada - British Virgin Islands
Anegada is a group of islands located in the north most of British Virgin
Islands (BVI) and the 2nd biggest island of the country.
Anegada is situated 30 miles
east of the main Tortola island is the most remote among the main islands of BVI. Anegada is geographically different from the other islands as its made up of
limestone and coral while the other islands are of volcanic origin and have a
rugged and hilly terrain. The main attraction of
Anegada island is the 18 mile long
Horseshoe Reef, the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean. This coral reef
is also responsible for the several hundred shipwrecks found in this region.
Anegada is overall a low and flat and the highest point is just 28 feet above the sea level and often referred as drowned island. There are some beautiful white sand beaches in Anegada. Island has a small Auguste George Airport (NGD). A small population of people living on these islands depend heavily on fishing, most of them live in the main town called Settlement. Most of the tourists who come here are looking for remote beaches and relaxation. Due to conservation efforts large sections are off limits to the visitors. Some species found in Anegada are include rock iguana, turtles, lobster and flamingo. South shore flats have a large population of bonefish. Anegada can be toured in a day but you will not find too much shade on this island. There are some shops like Gift Shop, Bar, Few Restaurants some villas guesthouse and campgrounds.
