The beautiful
Lamu is Kenya's oldest living town and is often referred as "enchanting" and is
located off the coast of Kenya. The charm and character built up has been over
the centuries. There are no cars and the main means of transport is donkeys.
Imagine such a town in which there's no traffic, no cars and no horns... so all
you have to do is relax. The beaches which are formed by the rolling sand dunes
has not changed much since the 14th century when it was settled as a Swahili
post for trading.
Lamu Island Kenya's History:
Being the oldest town of Kenya, it has a long history. It was a big center for amber, timber and ivory trade. Lamu Island's economy was also hinged on slave labour and with the abolition of slavery it declined rapidly after which the economy had a severe negative impact. In the 1960's the tourism arrived here and the economy has rebounded since then.
Society and Architecture:
The Lamu island has a distinctive charm and character. Swahili architecture can be seen everywhere, simple lines built in mangrove wood and coral, rooftop patios and porches enable the friendly local people to group socially and enjoy the afternoon breeze and beautiful ocean views. The donkeys wander through the labyrinthine streets the width of an average pavement. Lamu is strictly Islamic, so one has to be sensitive for dressing.
The road to Lamu is rough so the best way to get to Lamu is to fly. The reasonably less expensive Prestige Air Services fly daily via Malindi. The island is linked by ferry to Mokowe on the mainland and to Manda Island.
Additional things to see include the Lamu Fort built in 1808 (now a museum), another reason to travel is the roof offering great views on the Fort's surroundings, which include the Market and the endlessly fascinating Central Square. It was built with help of the Omani slave trader and Sultan Seyyid Said around 1810, the Stone Fort looked out over the sea to protect the Lamu people from hostile alliances. Lamu Island's seafood is quite famous among the tourists. Shela is a village about 2 miles from Lamu Town with several guest houses feature by the coast.
Some hotels of Lamu include: Kipungani Bay-Lamu, Lamu Palace Hotel , Chale Paradise Hotel , Stone House Hotel and Peponi Hotel.
Lamu island of Kenya is a great travel and tourism destination for tourists who want to enjoy good old days, especially a place with no vehicles.
