Livingstonia - Malawi
Established in 1894 this mission settlement of Livingstonia in Malawi was
founded by a follower of David Livingstone named Robert Laws, who was a by
missionary from the Free Church of Scotland. The red stone house in which Robert
Laws lived is available for overnight renting and it is also regarded as the
museum. Renting this home for travel and tourism will be great experience.
Livingstonia has a lovely weather all year long but Sept-December are the best visiting time for this region. The water front and golden sandy beaches gives a relaxing ambience to this place. There is a church built in Scottish style in year 1894 and has paintings depicting David Livingstone's arrival. The hotels here offer a fine cuisine for the travelers and tourists making it a comfortable place for tourism. A wide variety of water sports can also be done.
Livingstonia is situated in the Sengha Bay, and very close to the Lilongwe Airport. It is 270 miles north of the capital, Lilongwe. Livingstonia has beautiful views across to Tanzania and is situated above Lake Malawi. In 1859 Livingstone visited Lake Nyasa and witnessed the slave trade. He went back to Scotland and attracted public awareness of this situation. By 1873 missionary society bases had started co come in this region.
Malaria was a big problem in those times. Since Livingstonia is located in the mountains and therefore was not prone to mosquitoes carrying malaria. The mission station gradually developed into a small town. Dr Robert Laws established Livingstonia as the best school in his time for the whole region. British forces put an end to the slave trade in 1890s, the other European countries were still using slaves for coffee plantations. Decades later there were revolts to end the foreign domination. Today, Livingstonia in Malawi is a popular place for travel and tourism.
