If you want to really experience vast authentic sand dunes desert then Namib
desert is the place to go, it is located inland from the Atlantic ocean. Namib
desert
is the oldest desert on the face of the earth and has the highest sand dunes. It
occupies a staggering 50,000 square kilometers of area and is the 4th largest
conservation area of the world. Namib desert is an endless sea of sand with red and gray
sand dunes all around. The view during sunrise and sunset is extremely
beautiful. If you try to climb a 300 meters tall sand dune, it requires a great
deal of energy. The highest dunes are set around ephemeral clay pans at Sossusvlei.
The vastness of Namib Desert is seen from the air, either by a small plane or balloon ride. There quite a few desert lodges and camps to chose from. Overtime the insects, plants and animals have adapted to live in this inhospitable land. You can sometimes find ostriches, springbok, adders, lazy lizards, birdlife beetles and oryx. Some plants and creatures often rely on the mist in air to compensate for the low rainfall. Namib Desert's sand dunes are always on move and keep changing their face with the direction of air flow, as the desert is slowly creeping westwards into the sea, reclaiming land over a period of many years.
