The famous Spitzkoppe is a majestic granite mountain located between Usakos and Swakopmund rising to a altitude of about 1800 metres. It is a 100 million year old granite mountain and the region around is known as Spitzkoppe National Reserve. This mountain is a part of Erongo mountain range and Spitzkoppe mountain was created due to the collapse of a gigantic volcano. This resulted in the exposing of granite and volcanic rock in this dry wilderness. It is often regarded as "Matterhorn of Namibia".
There is a special zone in this mountain called the "Bushman Paradise" where you can see many primitive paintings made by people who must have lived thousands of years back. The Spitzkoppe rises majestically out of the surrounding plains and is visible from great distances away.
Spitzkoppe mountain is not the highest mountain of the country but surely the most famous, lot of tourists come here and take pictures, this mountain is very scenic during the sunrise and sunset when the granite appears in saffron and ochre colors. There are several unusual rock formations on Spitzkoppe. Next to the Spitzkoppe mountain lie the "Little Spitzkoppe" with a height of 1584 meters. The looks can be deceptive and this mountain is much difficult to climb than it initially looks, its recommended that you have some mountain climbing experience and physically fit to climb. The granite of mountain becomes very hot in the summer season.
