Bay Of Islands - New Zealand
It's a Maritime park with over 150 islands of
different sizes dotted around the clear waters of the bay. It is a popular
travel and tourism destination and a must for anyone visiting Northland in New
Zealand. The bay is one of the worlds popular places for fishing, from December
until June fishermen do their best to catch striped and blue marlin, yellow fin
tuna, broadbill and sharks. There are also spectacular opportunities to go for
dolphin and whale watching, you can even swim with the dolphins which will be a
lifetime experience. There are several good dive sights as well for scuba
diving, you can even go to look at the wreck of the Rainbow Warrior, sunk by the
French secret service in 1985.
The main centers here are Kerikeri, Paihia and Russell.
Kerikeri is one of the three major towns in the bay which serve as jump-off
points for exploring land and sea in the region.
Paihia is centrally located within a short distance of Waitangi Reserve and the
base for many more excursions, including the popular Cape Brett hole in the
rock cruise.
Russell is smaller but a charming town and is more peaceful, with many historic
buildings, good restaurants and antique shops.
