Milford Sound - New Zealand
It is located in the Fiordland region of New Zealand's South Island. Milford
Sound is one of the most stunning locations in the world and one of the most
popular travel and tourism destination of New Zealand. It is best known of the
Fiords and sounds that were gouged out of the coast by glaciers some 15,000 -
20,000 years ago. This glorious wilderness of forests and mountains, lakes and
waterfalls contains some of the best of New Zealand's hiking trails.
Milford can be explored by foot, Cruise or by air. The Milford Track is a four
day hike from Te Anau Lake, across the Mackinnon pass to Milford Sound. It is
renowned amongst the hikers as one of the most beautiful walks in the world. If
walking doesn't appeal, take a cruise to the mouth of the sound. A cruise or
scenic flight over Milford Sound offers close-up views of the countless
waterfalls that stream down the slopes of the precipitous ice carved mountains,
which are draped in moss and bordered by fern-filled forests. You will also get
a chance to see the Sinbad Gully, a classic glacial valley that is the refuge of
the endangered Kakapo, as well as seals, dolphins and penguins.
The far end of the sound is dominated by the 1,412m Mitre Peak, and it is the
combination of constantly changing light, clouds, sunshine, pouring rain and
rainbows that make it a dramatically beautiful place.
