Saba island is the smallest among the five Dutch (Netherlands) Antilles in
Caribbean islands. Saba tourism attracts about 25,000 tourists annually.
It is a rocky
volcanic island (also called "The Rock") and is located east of Puerto Rico in
the Caribbean and a major destination for eco-tourism.
Saba tourism is famous
for lush mountain forests, excellent scuba diving and snorkeling. Travel to Saba
Island is done
usually via the St. Marten island, either by air or ferry. St. Marten island is
about 35 kilometers away from Saba.
The total area of the island is just 13 square km with a population of about
1500 residents. There is only one long main a 9 mile concrete road in the
entire island called "the Road", which connects all four places Hell's Gate, Windward side, St. John's and the capital
The Bottom, that makes Saba tourism quite easy.
Mt. Scenery:
The highest point of Saba Island is Mount Scenery, nearly
3,000 feet above the Caribbean Sea. It is a popular tourist destination and the
top is usually covered by a misty cloud cover.
Saba University School of Medicine / Hospital:
The island also has the famous Saba University School of Medicine, which was established by coordination of the Americans and the Netherlands government with about 300 students. Local people of Saba Island are hardy, creative and friendly.

Saba island was ruled by the British, French and Spanish before the Dutch colonial rule. English is the primary language on this island and almost everyone is a Christian, Therefore English speakers easily enjoy Saba Tourism when it comes to communication with the locals, without worrying about language issues. Dutch is the official language.

Saba Weather:
The average temperature is about 82 degrees Fahrenheit ( about 27°C). Trade winds keep the island cool, and temperatures are a bit cooler in Windwardside than in The Bottom. Saba is also known as the "The Unspoiled Queen" of Caribbean. December to July is the dry season and usually the best time to go.

The first question which that pops up - Why visit Saba Island ?
• The waters of Saba island are clear and great for diving and experiencing the ocean and marine life. Saba is rated among the best places in the Caribbean for diving. Scuba divers and snorkellers can see coral, sponges, large fishes , and the occasional nurse shark and sea turtle. There are tunnels, overhangs and caves also to explore. The only popular beach at Well's Bay, which also is the island's only harbor, it has a bit the rocky shore and chocolate-colored sand and ragged cliffs towering overhead. Even though it is not the best location for beach, the tourists can still find some small sections of black and white sand.
• Tourists enjoy hiking on top of Mount Scenery with great views from the top. If you want to climb the Mount Scenery, its a 90 minute hike from Windward side going through a tropical rain forest to the summit. There is a nearby bird sanctuary, Green Island. If you want to shop there are several local gift shops and boutiques.
• Locals are mostly very friendly and genuine.
• Saba Marine Park's underwater mountains, lay back and relax.
• The Harry L. Johnson Museum in Windward side,
a 150-year-old house surrounded by lemongrass and clover, gives some insight of
island history and variety of artifacts.
General Lifestyle, Food, Transportation and Events - Saba Tourism:
Saba island consists of four villages, you can either walk or take a taxi to go around or
even rent a car. The locals are friendly and the food is great. There are no big
international chains but the smaller restaurants serve a variety of cuisines
including American, Chinese, Italian, Local Preparations and more.
Sometimes on weekends there is an all
island party there people play music, drums and barbeque. Saba tourism has a
unique attraction- The annual
Carnival, held each year during the third week of July, is the highlight of
the island's social calendar. Due to limited area, Sabans protect of their
natural resources. Tourism is the main industry. Fishing is popular, Farming
mostly includes cashew, coconut, giant elephant ears, banana, mango trees and
more.
Shopping and Currency of Saba Island:
The main
supermarket is called the Big Rock. You can shop for Caribbean art, framed
paintings and many shops at the Lambee Plaza in Windward side. Dutch guilder is
the official currency. US dollars, major credit cards and travellers
cheques are all widely accepted. ATM machines are located at The Bottom and in

Nightlife:
Saba tourism is not famous as a place for a high end nightlife, but at least a few nightlife options are available on both weekdays and
weekends. There are some pubs offering beer, barbeque and other options. There
is no official closing time of these places. Some cafe's offer live
entertainment and free movie on a weekend. On weekends there is usually an open
party ( everyone is invited ). There is disco, music, drums and barbeque.
Saba Tourism Visa:
Since it is a free port there is no tourist visa required to enter Saba Island. A valid
identification like passport and an ongoing ticket are required.

You will find a few cozy inns and guest houses which offer relaxed atmosphere at
reasonable rates.
