Birds in Jurong BirdparkThe Jurong BirdPark is an outstanding example of the Singapore's hard work that has been put in for the preservation of country's natural beauty and birdlife. It has the largest number of birds compared to any bird park of the world and second largest in land area ( biggest being the Vogelpark Walsrode in Germany). There are more than 8,000 birds and 600 species, out of which about 30 are endangered species. Jurong BirdPark has specimens of magnificent bird life from all over the world. A center point of attraction for many tourists is a flock of about one thousand flamingos and a 2-hectare free-flight aviary exhibit. The Jurong BirdPark boosts the largest collection of south-east Asian birds. World's largest indoor aviary and also the biggest variety of birds which participate in a bird show. The world's tallest artificial/man made waterfall measuring 30 meters in height, the list of records just keeps going on. It also has large walk-in aviaries for birds from South East Asia, South America, Australia and Africa. The total land area of the park is 20 hectares attracting about 1 million tourists every year. The bird park has received many awards of excellence in service. This place is truly a bird lovers paradise and a perfect family hangout

QUICK HISTORY:
The idea to make this park was first put together by Dr Goh Keng Swee in 1968 who was the minister of defense. He envisioned this place to be a location where people could come, relax and enjoy the refreshing natural ambience. It was first opened in January 1971 with an initial capital of 3.5 million Singapore dollars. Recently the park completed a huge makeover and upgraded many sections of the park. It includes African wetlands exhibit, a new entrance plaza, bird hospital, gift shop and many restaurants. The birds live in an environment that is closest to their natural habitat. It is known as 'Taman Burung Jurong' in Malay.

LOCATION AND GETTING AROUND
The park is built on the western slope of Jurong Hill, located about 24 km (15 miles) from downtown Singapore. An air-conditioned modern Panorail (panoramic monorail) system covers almost the entire BirdPark and is the best way to start a tour. It has 3 stations, one at the entrance, at the Lory Loft and at the Waterfall Aviary.
