Drakensberg mountains ( or "Dragons Mountain") are the highest mountains of South Africa and located in southeast coast of the country. The highest peak is Thabana Ntlenyana at 3,482 meters, they extend from northeast to southwest for around 1,125 kilometers. Drakensberg is part of the Great Escarpment and the main watershed of South Africa. These mountains are a paradise for tourists seeking adventure and nature lovers. Apart from the very rich flora and fauna this place is literally loaded with activities like hiking, mountain biking, mountain climbing, horse riding, bird watching, river swimming, and trout fishing or just watch for animals like eland antelopes, grey roebuck, mountain reedbuck, mountain cats and jackal, or simply come to relax in solitude away from the daily hectic life. Its a huge region and has been divided into North, south and central Drakensberg. This region has been declared a World Heritage Site.
Drakensberg also has the largest river in the region called Tugela and many other rivers like Orange and Vaal. The flora and fauna is breathtaking and some of the plants in this area are unique and not found elsewhere. Climbing the peaks of these mountains is not easy due to the difficult terrains, its recommended that you are physically fit before taking on these terrains. In Zulu they are referred as "barrier of spears". There are several tall peaks (3000 meters plus) in the area bordering on Lesotho. There are about 40,000 ancient rock paintings made by the Bushmen who were also the earliest inhabitants of this region. There are several hotels ranging range from economy to luxury. Food is great, you will find both authentic traditional and foreign cuisines. Camping organizers in the area and provide guided options for both day and overnight tours. You can often find locals selling handicrafts made from Gashu, the weaving grass and can be also used as a souvenir.
