Zanzibar is a beautiful coral island in
Indian Ocean, 40 km from the mainland Tanzania. It offers beautiful white sand
beaches, coconut palms, coral reefs, birds, squirrels, a wide variety of marine
life. Zanzibar island takes over 90% of international tourists to the Tanzanian
coast. Even though the coastline is more developed than other places of Tanzania
it still remains authentic and full of local color. There are three islands that
together make up the archipelago of Zanzibar, the main island, commonly known as
main Zanzibar Island or Unguja and is the most popular travel destination of
Zanzibar island.
Zanzibar island is known as the spice island for a reason, there are Day-long tours to the spice plantations where visitors get the chance to observe the cultivation of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and other spices that have made the island famous. Zanzibar island has successfully maintained its heritage and many of the winding streets and high townhouses of old Stone Town have remain unchanged. Visitors can walk between the House of Wonders, the Portuguese fort, Sultan’s palace and gardens, the merchants’ houses, and the Turkish baths of the old city.
Zanzibar island is rich in wildlife, the green turtle and hawksbill turtle lay their eggs near the shores close to Ras Rgunwi lighthouse. In September you can see some humpback whales which are migrating. Dolphins ( bottlenose and spinner) are popular attractions of Zanzibar island. Jozani park has red and blue monkeys and many types of birds and sun squirrels. Fishing and tourism are the biggest industries of this region. Zanzibar has a blend of cultures including Persian, India's, Chinese and Portuguese descendents. On the northern tip close to Nungwi beach has a luxury resort hotel, the Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel. The east coast has many of small beach resorts, with bungalows which rent out very cheaply.
Best time to go to Zanzibar Island:
July to October - during this period, there is little rain on Zanzibar island, the average temperature is 25ºC and the humidity is low.
November to March - are good months although the short rains come at this time and it is VERY hot and humid.
April to June - this is the quiet season. The long monsoon rains pour down.
