It is the capital of Republic of Tunisia, located next to Lake Tunis,
north-east of Tunisia. Tunis is a modern city with good hotels, banks, business
complexes, its clean appearance and both men and women wear modern garments. On
the other hand, in the older lively oval shape medina area ( close to Zitouna
Mosque), you will still find the narrow streets with smaller shops, and these
sell authentic carpets, leather goods, garments, brassware, perfumeries, dried
fruits, carpets, jewellery their treasures of brassware, olive wood, spice,
almond, leather, souvenirs, antiques, berber jewelry, pottery and more at a good
price.
Medina area was declared as a world heritage site in 1979 for its (approximately) 700 monuments. Tunis is divided into three parts, the French, which now is the centre; the old city, called medina; and the newer regions built in the south and the north of the city. Since the old times and among the centuries, the city has been a leading centre of trade between Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Tourists planning to go to Hammamet and Sousse should consider visiting here for atleast a day trip.
Popular tourism spot is the largest mosque in Tunisia is Zitouna Mosque and is a famous historic landmark and very famous religious center for Muslims in the city, it is also a popular landmark for the tourists. This mosque dates back to the 9th century with major additions to it in the 19th century. It is expected that both men and women dress modestly, Muslims can enter the Mosque but Non-Muslims can go only till the courtyard.
Bardo Museum, occupying the palace of the ruler (Ottoman-era bey) ,is located in the suburbs of Tunis. The collection of Roman mosaics in the Bardo museum is considered to be one of the best in the world. You will find priceless acquisitions from Prehistoric, Roman, Punic, Christian and Islamic eras.
Other popular landmarks include Dar Ben Abdallah museum, Cathedral of St. Vincent de Paul , Bab el Bahr gate, Bab el Khadra Gate and Lake Tunis.
When to Go:
Because of its Mediterranean climate Spring and Autumn are the best time to visit Tunis.
How to reach:
Tunis-Carthage Airport (TUN), 8 km away from the center and a good place for currency exchange.
From there you travel further by either use taxis or buses to reach the city center.
